producer to director

the step from a great director to a producer (of your own movies for instance) is easily taken... but what about the step from a great producer to a director (again, your own movies) ?

If you are a producer you DO bring out your "own" movies.

Your as important as the director in getting the flick made. It's your movie too.

A director is not the be all and end all of the process.

I mean more like getting your own script, idea and behind the camera thing...

If you want to do all that, don't become a producer. Also wise up to the fact that you will never control everything on a film. Bar your back-garden camcorder nonsense, real films have a DOP, a producer, a director, a screen writer, a camera operator, an editor etc. You will have ONE job. Choose wisely my friend. Even if you were Orson Welles, trying to produce direct and write your own feature is nigh on impossible.

i have found directing a movie to be a humbling experience - as i only retained control by trustinh my team to go off and make small decisions for themselfs and come back to me with a number of options

i still cant help feeling a slight loss of control though... i dunno what everyone elses exeriences are

i agree, and of course, no-body can do everything, and why should they? film making is a collective pastime, thats why a 'director' needs to choose his workmates carefully.

You cant do everything, and the final result is always different from how you imagined it, it is the result of many hands input, and you have to be able to let go of your precious imaginary world and enjoy the collaboration

Sure. And your first job as producer is to hire a director and crew. And hopefully raise/invest some cash for the project.
